J.F.,

Re: Air Farce One --

What if the attack on the cargo plane last week was merely staged by the CIA to increase the sense of fear and foreboding in the American public's mind and President Bush knew that the with the electronic countermeasures on AF-1 and the fact that the airport perimeter is actually quite secure, that there was no outsized risk to flying AF-1 onto the runway at Baghdad?

Would this not be similar to 9/11, where when the Secret Service allowed Bush to continue reading about goats with a class of third graders for at least 15 minutes after the President was aware of the second plane striking the WTC (9:03 AM). And they allowed the President to participate in a previously scheduled news conference at 9:30 AM. At which point, the President was whisked back to the airport and took off in AF-1 without any fighter escort! after the most outrageous attacks on America since Pearl Harbor.

Did someone in a position to control the fighter response of the U.S. Air Force/NORAD realize that the President was in no imminent danger?

Have we entered the Twilight Zone? Or have we entered the dystopian future that George Orwell warned us of in "1984"?

"In some ways she was far more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to Party propaganda. Once when he happened in some connexion to mention the war against Eurasia, she startled him by saying casually that in her opinion the war was not happening. The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the Government of Oceania itself, ’just to keep people frightened’. This was an idea that had literally never occurred to him." --George Orwell: 1984
