GST,

I get your point, but we do not encourage Taiwanese in declaring independence, in fact US policy is to discourage it for the sake of the relationship with the mainland.

Having said that - what else could we do if a Taiwanese leader, despairing at the continuing erosion of freedoms and economic wealth in Hong Kong chose to declare formal indeoendence? Being allied to them does not give us any veto on their actions.

There is much distrust of the Chinese in South-East Asia and any such movement on Taiwan will not bode well for Chinese minorities in Malaysia, Indonesia etc. And such a move will bring new support against Chinese Imperialism in Tibet and the Western non-Han provinces. Someone should ask the General if he is prepared to face unrest or outright revolt on 3 or 4 fronts.

One might ask in the enviornment where there has been rather conciliatory words coming from Taiwan, what internal issues are hapenning that China needs a bogeyman to distract her population?

John

You are misreading China. Taiwan is an issue the transcends your logic. China is not bluffing and will pay the consequences rather than stand-by. They will go to war over Taiwan if pushed. Any gamesmanship that believes there is lots of wiggle room is beyond dangerous. China and the US are highly interdependent, but China would not hesitate to act.

We've read several papers that state exactly this.
