Let me add my thoughts on MacNeil-Lehrer's reporting on Samarra. They reported two Mideast stories back to back, the first, the fight in Samarra, the second, the IDF's raid/fight in Ramallah.

Gist of story one (from memory): 3 Americans wounded and 46 Iraqis killed in ambush in Samarra. The Americans were ready for a guerilla ambush, and a fight ensued. Iraq civilians charge many of the dead were civilians. The Americans insist most of the dead were combattants

Gist of story two: The Israelis shot a nine year old Palestinian boy today, and also killed three Hamas militants in a gunbattle in Ramallah.

Now, both engagements involved regular army troops fighting irregular guerillas in the middle of city. In the first, it is clear that the troups are fighting, but some (wildly varying claims how many) civilians may have been caught in the cross-fire.

When they report on Americans, it's clear that any civilian dead were collateral damage. When they report on Israelis, they make it sound like the IDF shot the young boy right off for sport.

And Macneil-Lehrer is generally one of the better programs for Mideast reporting.
