Corporations trying to build brand image often put "influencers" like Krugman on their advisory boards. They pay them well and, for that, favorable press seeps out. Conversely, with Enron's $50K in hand, there was almost NO CHANCE that Krugman would write something unfavorable about them, let alone a hatchet job, which he has done to many companies.

Had Krugman not been a member of the NYT editorial page, he wouldn't have gotten a sniff at Enron's money.
