Democrats Searching for Issues in 2004 Race

By Gary Lane

December 5, 2003

If the economy keeps getting stronger, that will help the president in 2004 and take away an issue the Democrats hoped to use against him.

CBN.com – (CBN News) -- The nation received an early Christmas present Friday hours after President Bush lit the national Christmas tree on the Washington ellipse.
The nation's unemployment rate has dropped to 5.9 percent -- its lowest level in eight months, as employers added more jobs for the fourth straight month. Some analysts hoped for stronger job growth, but overall, it indicates better times ahead.

The key now is if the positive economic news will inspire strong consumer spending at Christmas time to keep things moving in an upward direction, and if businesses keep spending more in 2004.

If the economy keeps getting stronger, that will help the president in 2004 and take away an issue the Democrats hoped to use against him.

Other items on the list for political debate next year? The war on terrorism and security for American troops and civilians in Iraq.

An explosion outside a Baghdad mosque Friday killed two Iraqi civilians and injured 13.

And President Bush may raise an issue that's out of this world, he may soon announce plans to return Americans to the moon.

A plan to resume lunar exploration is being considered as a fresh agenda item for the final year of the president's first term.

Domestically, one issue the Democrats almost certainly want to avoid is homosexual marriage. Polls show the public firmly is against it. Democrats will probably try to dodge it, while Republicans will say marriage is a sacred commitment between one man and one woman.
