I see. Well, I think you are wrong, not because politicians do not have to contemplate the political consequences of what they do, but because that is subordinate to a lot of other considerations, like getting the job done. Politicians will sometimes take unpopular positions, as Blair did in the UK, hoping to minimize damage, yes, but clearly not merely calculating for electoral effect. Similarly, I think it is silly to suppose that Bush invaded Iraq for political advantage, when the risks are clearly great, and public support was weak at the time........
