I think that we can make it illegal to deface a historic landmark, even if the person owns the building so designated. However, buildings do not have rights. One is not per se answerable to the animal, but to the community that upholds certain standards of behavior..........

<<Do beasts have the right to protection from inhumane treatment? If so, then we begin the discussion of animal rights at that point. If not, then I can light the kitty that I 'own' on fire and drag it behind my pickup truck on my private property for amusement. Who does it hurt?>>

There are laws on the books about inhumane animal treatment. If you keep an animal and don't give it food, water and shelter the animal gets taken and you get fined or jailed. If I saw someone lighting a kitty on fire and dragging it, Ish's law would happen and the person would suffer the death penalty.

I have read, and it makes sense to me, that a person who is cruel to animals will eventually commit some horrible crimes against people. No feelings of empathy, just stone cold nasty.

I was a hunter for many years and have quit. Getting old. I did shoot many animals and ate them. Always set up for the best shot and quickest kill. It was a predator / prey situation. Instant kill was always the intent.
