<Why would China want to start to slow down their economy over a war for Taiwan.. > They don't want to -- so ask yourself this, why would Taiwan make any move in the direction of independence knowing that it would not only wreck their economy which is highly dependent on China, but would also provoke an extraordinarily bloody war at the same time? The US defense commitment to Taiwan is already an explosive and contradictory policy. Lets hope there are no idiots running around playing with matches.

Why would China want to start to slow down their economy over a war for Taiwan..

Because they have to. It's just that simple. Whoever loses Taiwan will lose the control over China.

Why did China enter the Korean war and support a genocidal murderer who plundered the resources of the Pennisula and caused mass starvation?

Why does China not allow free elections and a free press?

Why does China censor the internet?

Why did China cling to a marxist economy for so long when hundreds of thousands of people were starving and it was clear free enterprise and ownership of property would end the suffering?

The answer to all of these questions, including the one you asked, is "power and control".

Let's not fool ourselves here, China's communist leaders don't allow free elections, for the same reason dictators throughout history have not allowed free elections. They would lose their grip of power and control over the people.

They are losing their grip of power and control over Taiwain and simply don't like it. So they threaten military action, threaten invasion, threaten murdering millions of women and children and threaten economic interests in order to maintain the small grip of control they have over that free and prosperous island.

What prevents the dictatorial regime of China from exercising that desire today is the might of the American military. The same might which forced them into a stalemate in Korea and created the environment whereby a prosperous South Korean nation was created.
