Some mighty strange things are going on in China. Here's a radical prediction:

By 100 years from now, the situation which currently obtains, where Chinese from different sections of the country have great difficulty communicating verbally, will die away, and a single dialect will take over the country.

My model for this is the US, where population movements and the influence of radio and TV have caused a marked decrease in regional accents over the past few decades.
