It's undignified for China to get such foam-flecked lips over Taiwan. New Zealand, Canada, Belgium are all minor second fiddles to Australia, USA, France and none of them get all het up about being independent or having a little sidekick being independent. Devolution to smaller states within a regionalized and globalized integrated world seems to be the trend.

Now and then Canadians whine about timber tariffs and Kiwis whine about this that and the other. But overall, greater or lesser independence seems okay without the need for threatening to invade Canada or Quebec if they go independent from the USA. NAFTA seems to be an opposite trend.
