Yiwu, there is an expression, "A week is a long time in politics". I know I'm picky about Jay's obverse view of the situation, but to say "his chance is slipping away forever" involves an awfully long time, even if you only meant his own lifetime. Unless you have got word of an assassination by China or something.

If you and Jay are so certain of your numbers of patriotic countrymen determined to fight to the death of other people, and perhaps themselves, to force compliance from people who don't particularly want you as their boss, it seems weird, obverse, perverse and churlish to get so wound up about the Taiwanese arranging a referendum to get some actual scientific facts on the matter.

I know China is late understanding scientific principles and that it is full of mysticism, [though perhaps less so, or in a reverse way, or obverse way, to keep Jay happy, to that of the supernaturalist USA and idolatrous Moslems], but a good way to settle disputes is by data collection rather than inquisition and subsequent witch burning.

Surely there are at least some Chinese who can advise on scientific management of data by way of a referendum or two. Then we wouldn't need to say how many people we each know who think what, and how many are prepared to die, or at least have the opposition die, for some peculiar obverse beliefs without observed data.

I know you don't waste your precious time reading my wise words, but others might.
