I'd bet any large sum of money that I might possess that Taiwan will never use nuclear weapons against anybody and that the government of China will never use nuclear weapons against fellow Chinese in Taiwan. Some rare posters here threaten US nuclear attacks on China, to avoid mainland takeover of Taiwan. I assume that in 50 years Taiwan will be just another one of the provinces, with no more effort to be recognized as the official representative of China to the outside world. The transition will probably be so gradual that historians will argue about which year it was that it happened. As Jay informs you, it's begun to happen already. Communication, travel, etc. are being loosened; cross strait investment is hourly more and more important.
Once upon a time, in the Ching dynasty, women's feet were bound and the examination system became corrupted, and foreign imperialists began to chop off pieces of China as their own, e.g. the opium war and Hong Kong, the Japanese invasion of 1895, grabbing Taiwan, "concessions" in Shanghai etc. Well women's feet are no longer bound. There are few examinations for officialdom now, but there are examinations for universities and the university degree is worth lots. These examinations are fair and honest. I know this from friends who took them and are loathe to say any other good word about the Communists. Oh yes, and the imperialists are gone from China. It seems more and more evident that even the US is less and less inclined to threaten China about Taiwan. The obscene threats to murder millions of Chinese people come from demented clout-free posters to Silicon Investor. Maurice, please stick to your science semi-fiction, please don't join those demented threateners.
