Georgia is more of a natural ally than, say, Turkey, as it is Christian. Also, as you say, a strategic location. Same with Armenia. Azerbaijan, of course, is Muslim, but they really need a market for their oil, and I don't think Russia or Iran are it. So, another source of non-Arab oil. Also, the Azerbaijani Muslims don't seem to be much into jihad. At least they're Shia, and the country does practice separation of church and state.

Which is exactly why the Russkies haven't pulled out like they're supposed to. Ole Eduard liked poking the Bear. I thought for sure the Georgian "velvet revolution" had the Russian SVR written all over it.
