No, it was luck since none of the other major candidates happened to vote that way because they gave Bush the benefit of the doubt and wanted Saddam dealt with.

Dean didn't have to vote. He had the luxury of sitting back to see what happened. As soon as things went bad in Iraq he came out saying he was the only one who opposed the war. In fact, prior to that he just had serious reservations. That gave him a big issue to separate himself from the pack. That's how he got the liberal left squarely behind him. The angry far left are still the only ones behind him. His "lead" nationally is still only in the high teens which is most of the anti-war left. They're probably about 25% of the party total plus some Naderites. In this crowded a field, 25% could win it, unless Gore stops him.
