Most of Dean's backers are the far-left, seen by the mainstream as radical and scary. They're the ones you see at the peace marches, etc. Nothing aganst those people personally, but they don't win national elections and they only offer Bushies an easier target.

Dean's jobs program is no more or less different than other candidates. His big plus is that he's corralled the energy of the very angry anti-war left. Without them he'd be running 5th or 6th.

Gore is fresh as a daisy now after a 3 year absence.
The reason he may become the nominee is that the Deanies look right on target to create a deadlock. They are the minority but they will probably be in first place among the top six. 30% of the delegates tops and then they'll demand that they win. Problem is, no one else wants Dean because they know what an easy target he'd make for Bush.
