as I said yesterday or so, the Koran as we know it today is a document that has been the subject of various interpretations over time. I suspect its the same with the Bible. So, "period. end of story", is not really the end - these documents will continue to be interpreted by different people in different ways in the future.

Which is a difference in kind, not degree.

Not like Talmud scholars, pilpuling. Not like Jesuits, examining each other's consciences without even being asked.

Challah and brioche and pita are all breads, but they aren't alike.

I know the arguments in favor of functional equivalence drive you crazy, too.
