The way I understand the history of religions originating from the Middle East, goes like this. It is a fairly simplistic way of looking at things :

First there was Moses, then there was Jesus, then there was Mohammed. Apparently, some religious elders say "man did not recieve God's message, so different messengers had to be sent".
