Nicea was simply a codification of what the Church had taught from the beginning. Simply read the Biblical texts. The teaching that He is God is very clear. Even if one claims Christ Himself never said He was God, it is most clear that the earliest Christians believed He was God. The reason Nicea came along some 4 centuries later was because Arius aimed to introduce novelty, novelty that was very tempting since it had the support of a great many eastern scholars. The church prior to that time believed and followed what is even now recorded in the Scriptures and what was recorded there long before Arius.
