<The US has an inherent right to defend itself> The implication is clear enough. Only "we" - the Republican President and Congress, complete with the Office of Homeland Security and Patriot Acts Mk. I and II -can protect "you". And, of course, anyone who attacks the US even verbally or attacks President Bush's "policies" is either a terrorist if outside the US or a traitor if inside. What does voting for a traitor make YOU? Vote for US! General fears may exist only in the mind, but they are nonetheless debilitating. They hamper both thought and action. Where such general fears, without object, exist in an individual mind, one is dealing with a mental illness. A mental illness can be as damaging as any real physical illness. In a situation in which politicians strive with might and main to induce general fears, their object is to instill an intellectual and active incapacity in the minds of those who listen to them. Their final goal is always to have such individuals implicitly accept two unstated messages. The first message is: "Don't think - we'll do your thinking for you". The second is: "Don't act - we'll either act for you or we'll tell you specifically what to do". In the end, wherever this takes place, one will see a large number of scared individuals like yourself standing around passively waiting to be told what to think and what to do. That has always been the totalitarian ideal. It is easy to tell such people that THESE other people are their enemies and the cause of all your fears - so kill them and you will never have to live in fear again. This has been put over many times in history, it is THE weapon of all totalitarians.
