Oracle, SAP eye China’s SME market
Teresa Leung, Dec 08 2003

Hong Kong: The large enterprise applications vendors have been competing neck and neck for the lion’s share of China’s SME market, having upped their efforts to localise applications lately.

Oracle, for instance, has released an updated version of its E-Business Suite Special Edition for China, aiming for a foothold in the manufacturing sector, while SAP plans to introduce vertical applications for SMEs.

According to Oracle, its updated version targets manufacturers in both China and Hong Kong and has more ERP functions, compared with the first version of the software application, which catered to the financial industry.

Manufacturing is an important vertical in China, said Arics Poon, Oracle’s managing director for South China and Hong Kong. For instance, the value of goods exported from South China alone, including the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, and Hainan, amounted to US$268 billion last year, equivalent to the combined export value of Taiwan and South Korea.

SAP is hot on the heels of Oracle, having launched the localised version of Business One for SMEs in September and is in talks with independent software vendors (ISVs) for versions customised for vertical segments such as manufacturing and retail.
