Presidents Remade by War
nytimes.com

Interesting comments on how presidents change their position when too much blood is spilled and they need to adapt to public opinion. At least Lincoln wrote his own speeches, I doubt Bush could write a speech.

I do grapple with being blinded by hate. You're right, I despise Bush. I didn't when he was elected although I thought it was a shame that the US Supreme Court set a new precedent to appoint a president. But, his foreign policy is one of death and hate. No one seems to care about how many innocents have been killed by our weapons. Even the 9 children murdered in Afghanistan yesterday have been all but forgotten. I couldn't believe the Lt Colonel I saw on the news who said "We didn't think there were any children here." What? No children in a village of families, what an idiot, he should be court marshaled. To send an A-10 Warthog Tank Killer with 30 mm gattling guns to take out one man is an irresponsible overkill, it's negligent homicide at best. Bush is responsible for this kill'em all and let God sort'em out policy. His economic policy is terrible and dooms our future. He's incompetent.

In the book "1984", Orwell had the state of Oceania in a state of perpetual war against threatening evil, so as to control the population through fear - sound familiar?
