I wouldn't be surprised if he's deep enough in the pockets of the powers that be not to question why he was invited to a military base on a day America was under attack. My guess is there were quite a few of those who could be considered fellow travelers, that were trusted not to say anything as long as they weren't trusted with actually knowing anything. For example, if an official called to chat with an air traffic controller, at a time when the air traffic controller should have been reporting a hijacking to NORAD, the conversation might not be mentioned if the air traffic controller had similar sympathies and the whole thing could be written off as coincidence.
