Gore's endorsement may be key for Dean

MASON CITY, Iowa -- A few things lacking from the surging Howard Dean campaign could be delivered today, when former Vice President Al Gore formally endorses the Democratic presidential front-runner.

A nod from Gore, the party's 2000 nominee, confers on Dean the promise of establishment credibility and a firmer grip on the lead as he heads into the critical early presidential primaries.

"To those voters just starting to pay attention, this is a sign that here is someone who is going somewhere, here is someone with a certain credibility and maybe now they start paying attention to Dean," said Arthur Sanders, a political scientist at Drake University in Des Moines. "It's also a real negative for his opponents."

Although endorsements tend to bring a candidate more good will than votes or money, Gore's endorsement may finally dispel criticism from within the party that Dean is not electable.

"This is an opportunity for him," Sanders said.

Gore plans to endorse Dean today in Harlem before the two travel to Iowa for a joint campaign event, sources told reporters Monday.
