A car bomb exploded near the entrance to an American army base in northern Iraq today after troops opened fire on the vehicle when it failed to stop, and 31 American soldiers were wounded, the United States military said.

A The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the soldiers' injuries were not life-threatening. A separate military statement said a "car bomb" caused the explosion.

Just west of Baghdad today, an American observation helicopter made a controlled landing near the town of Falluja, according to another military spokesperson. There were no reports of injuries and an investigation of the incident was under way.

Also today, three Iraqis were killed in an attack in Baghdad. Witnesses said it was a rocket attack launched against a Sunni Mosque in a Shiite neighborhood, and that in addition to the three Iraqis killed, two others were wounded. But Iraqi police quoted by Reuters said that the three were killed when explosives placed under a car parked in the grounds of a mosque were detonated shortly after morning prayers.

The car explosion in northern Iraq took place at a base just outside of the city of Mosul, where on Monday an American soldier was killed while standing guard at one of the long lines of cars backed up at filling stations in Iraq because of a gasoline shortage.
