Surprised? I am not. I guess Bush has finally understood that China means what it says: Referendum=declaring independence=war!

I read that the US also sent a special Envoy to Taiwan and gave Chen ShuiBian a personal letter from Bush. So the US has finally cleared its ambiguity on Taiwan issue.

Your guess is as good as mine. IMHO, that all depends on how smart the US leaders are. Why the US uses the ceremony for the head of a state for the Chinese Premier? I don't think that has anything to do with Iraq, or Taiwan.

For as long as I can remember, the US wants to contain China. Seems to me that now finally, the US has understood that China is NOT containable. The US and China have to work together to solve whatever problem between them.
