That's true, and it's called having a conscience and taking responsibility for one's actions, even when they aren't very flattering. Republicans typically do, and left wingers typically don't.

That's why Nixon, Gingrich, and Livingstone resigned for their misdeeds, humbled and humiliated, and Clinton denied, wagging his finger, as did Torricelli.

Unfortunately in today's dog-eat-dog climate, the Repubs are going to have to take the heat and fight on, recognizing the fact that nobody's perfect.

As I said, liberals mostly won't go after other liberals
when they make racist comments. They will go out of their
way to ignore it or they will make any number of excuses
why the liberal didn't mean what they actually said.

Or if they do feel the need to jump on a comment from a fellow traveler, they totally miss the true offense in their rush to pander to some group they see as a "core constituency." Take Dean's Confederate flag gaff, for example. The larger offense was not that he was trying to appeal to racist white southerners or that he was using a racist symbol to do so; it's that he assumes (or at least implies) white southerners are racists who can be appealed to by waving the Confederate battle flag. All the dwarfs lined up behind Reverend Al, the biggest racist in national politics these days, to demand an apology to blacks. None of them, except perhaps for Edwards, had the faintest inkling of Dean's real offense - probably because they assume the same thing. And they wonder why Zell Miller endorsed Bush.

PS: Please stop referring to them as "liberals" - there is nothing liberal about them.
