Time magazine’s Alice Park reports in this week’s issue that if current trends continue for another decade or so, China could overtake Africa, where 29 million people have been infected with the virus. Dr. Ho is scheduled to inoculate his first healthy volunteers in New York with a U.S. version of his vaccine this week. Time accompanied Dr. Ho and his team from the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center for two weeks earlier this year as he travelled from Kunmin, the cosmopolitan capital of China’s Yunnan province, where his drug-treatment and vaccine projects are based, to the remote border town of Ruili, where heavy heroin trafficking and a thriving commercial sex trade create a perfect HIV breeding ground, to Beijing, for his meetings with party leaders. The Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center, an affiliate of The Rockefeller University, and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), announced this week that they have begun a human trial of a new investigational vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS. The trial is actively seeking healthy volunteers in New York City and Rochester, New York. The trial is designed to evaluate the safety of a new DNA vaccine called ADVAX. The vaccine is designed to stimulate immune responses to prevent people who are uninfected with HIV/AIDS from contracting the disease, and the trial will gather preliminary data on whether ADVAX stimulates these immune responses. windycitymediagroup.com
