7:34am 12/11/03 Goldman's Cohen ups S&P 500 earns estimates By Tomi Kilgore
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) - Goldman Sachs portfolio strategist Abby Joseph Cohen raised her earnings forecast for the S&P 500 to $53.50 a share for 2003 and to $58 a share from 2004 from $49 and $53, respectively, as an improved economy, strong productivity, a lower U.S. dollar, low interest rates and cost containment measures have contributed to higher margins and earnings. She added that U.S. firms appear to be "loosening the purse strings" for new investment and hiring, so the risk to 2004 economic growth forecasts is to the upside. Cohen also raised her dividend per share estimate to $17 from $16.50 for 2003 and to $17.75 from $17 for 2004. Her fair value estimate for the S&P 500 Index ($SPX: news, chart, profile) is 1,250 for the year-end 2004.
