Death sentence carried out on killer pig

The death sentence has been carried out on Hannibal, the pig which knocked its owner to the ground and bit him to death in Hungary.

Hannibal was beheaded at the request of the man's family.

The act was carried out in the presence of the Mayor of Kecel, where the incident happened.

The pig was nicknamed Hannibal after it savaged 64-year-old Jozsef Szepcsik in the same way as the pigs in the film starring Anthony Hopkins.

The farmer knew the pig had an aggressive nature after it attacked and badly bit a neighbour and he said he was looking forward to sending it to market.

But when Mr Szepcsik went to watch it being weighed ready for sale the pig broke free and attacked him, savaging him on the neck and in the face.

State vets are now examining the animal's brain in an attempt to find out what made it so aggressive.

"Jozsef should have killed Hannibal years ago," said Imre Jonas, the owner's brother-in-law. "Everyone told him the pig was a killer but he never took any notice and now he has paid the price."

Priest mauled to death by pig in well

A priest has died in southern India after an hour-long fight with a wild pig in a well.

Father Joy Kariyamkuzhiyil was attacked by the animal at night when he came out of his house to investigate the barking of a dog.

Taken by surprise, the 49-year-old jumped into an old, disused well in an attempt to escape, but the pig followed him in.

Local residents say the priest and pig wrestled for an hour before relatives managed to rescue him with a rope.

The assistant vicar of the St Thomas Jacobite Church at Vaalkulambu in Kerala state was taken to hospital but died before arriving.

A man from the village, who is known only by his first name Biju, told newspaper Sanje Suddhi: "It was bizarre. The beast was determined to maul him to death."

Local housewife Rossama George said: "The incident has left us completely shattered. If such a thing could happen to a man of God, ordinary people like us are even more vulnerable."

Oxnard man convicted for starving guinea pig to death

Thursday, October 24, 2002

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(10-24) 12:34 PDT VENTURA, Calif. (AP) --

An Oxnard man who allegedly dissected his pet guinea pig because he thought the government implanted a camera in its head to spy on him was convicted of animal cruelty because the rodent starved to death.

The jury also convicted Benny Zavala on Wednesday of being under the influence of methamphetamine, but the panel acquitted him of a second animal cruelty count of torturing the guinea pig because it was already dead when he dissected it.

Zavala, 34, faces up to three years in prison when Superior Court Judge Donald Coleman sentences him Nov. 20. He is free on bail and left the courtroom without comment.

Deputy Public Defender Robert Dahlstedt also declined comment.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Connors said Zavala's behavior was due to his drug habit.

"As a chronic user of methamphetamine, he became paranoid that the government was spying on him," Connors said.

Zavala was arrested in September 2001 after he telephoned relatives and said, "The good news is guinea bleeds. The bad news is guinea's dead," the prosecutor said in his opening statement.

A neighbor notified authorities after Zavala ripped open the animal's head. Zavala told the neighbor he thought the teeth were bar-coded and that there was a camera in the animal's head, the prosecutor said.

Connors said he hasn't decided what kind of punishment he will seek at sentencing, but he said prison was unlikely.
