Except that Tom Ridge didn't create the situation. It's been going on for a long, long time. Many, many, many years. Republicans love illegal immigrants because it's cheap labor. Democrats love illegal immigrants because they tend to vote Democrat. The laws are on the books so that trouble makers can be thrown out, and so that people with a bug in their ear about immigration are partially mollified. For reasons which escape me, anti-globalization is getting big press these days. Is something going on that makes throwing out illegal immigrants suddenly big news? As for asking Congress for more money, agency heads don't go to Congress, they go to the administration, and the administration assigns priorities. And, I assure you, throwing out undocumented Latinos less than a year before the next election isn't high on Dubya's priorities.
