Pilot passes go hi-tech
By TOM GODFREY - TORONTO SUN

Hundreds of Canadian pilots, flight crew and workers with access to planes are being issued hi-tech biometric passes next month to tighten security at airports nationwide. The move comes as airport security gears up for the busy Christmas season.

Officials said passes will help protect restricted areas from terrorists and stop drug smugglers and corrupt workers who plague Pearson and other airports.

"We are making the environment more secure," said Rene Fairweather, of the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

Fairweather said the machine-readable cards, which will monitor the country's 85,000 airport workers, will contain the holders' photograph and a biometric copy of their iris or fingerprint.
