IDC sees improved PC outlook for 2004
Reuters, 12.11.03, 8:49 AM ET

NEW YORK, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Market research group IDC said on Thursday it expects shipments of personal computers to increase 11.4 percent in 2004, up from its previous forecast for 10.2 percent growth.

The Framingham, Massachusetts company said it sees the value of those shipments rising 4 percent in 2004.

In the current quarter, which is typically the most important one for personal computer companies because of holiday sales, IDC said it sees growth of 15.3 percent.

That puts 2003 annual shipment growth up 11.4 percent from 2002, compared with previous expectations for an 8.4 percent increase.

Total shipments in 2003 are now expected to be more than 152 million with their total value flat at just over $175 billion, IDC said.

IDC analyst Roger Kay said in a statement that much of the growth is coming from consumers buying notebook computers rather than desktop computers.

The No. 1 personal computer company in the world is Dell Inc. (nasdaq: DELL - news - people), followed by Hewlett-Packard Co. (nyse: DELL - news - people). International Business Machines Corp. (nyse: DELL - news - people) and Gateway Inc. (nyse: DELL - news - people) also sell PCs.
