I don't think the average 2 or 3 letter issue is overvalued here. There are even some bargains to be had, IMO.
I caused some laughter on this thread about 18 months ago when I said I thought the airlines looked like an interesting play.
I called my travel agent today. A round-trip ticket from K.C. to Fort Lauderdale is going for $1,000 this holiday season.
Those cut-rate fares from a year or more ago couldn't last forever, I figured. And they didn't.
But consider:
Among the 4-letter stocks, at the bottom, I figured DISH was a safe bet.
Wrong. New installs are below plan. Is the home satellite market becoming saturated?
Good thing I didn't buy DISH. The reason I didn't was because some Fidelity Balanced fund had a huge slug of it, like 8 percent of the shares out. Fido ran it up, and Fido is dumping.
Lesson learned from the old days: Avoid issues that have a large chunk concentrated in a few hands. Anytime you see a stock that is the largest holding in a fund known for turnover, avoid it. Or short it, if you like more excitement. Just my opinion.
And my next investment will not be a 4-letter stock.
