The independent Biometrics Institution is asking the public for opinion before the discussion version of its Biometrics Privacy Code is finalized.

Biometrics covers technology involving human fingerprints, iris and face scans as well as hand geometry and DNA.

Mark Bezzina, chairman of the institute, has invited members of the public, employers, unions and other interest groups to participate in giving comments and ideas about the draft Privacy Code.

"The Code will go the Federal Privacy Commissioner, after at least three months, for his approval," said Bezzina.

The Code has been drafted by PPIB (Private Power and Infrastructure Board), a privacy firm in Sydney, after much consultations organized by Terry Aulich, the Code project manager.

"Already government agencies and private sector companies have indicated they want to sign up to the Privacy Code," Mr Aulich said. However, he said he is organizing new consultations to make sure the community and stakeholders were happy with the draft.

The Code will have the effect of law if accepted by the Privacy Commissioner and covers issues like extra protection for biometric information collected by an organization, the rights of consumers, accountability, standards and a complaints system.

The Biometrics Institute is a not-for-profit organization who is responsible for the use of biometrics technology.

The code can be viewed at online at www.biometricsinstitute.com.
