But perhaps all that hate is sobering, forcing Palestinians to become more realistic about driving the jews into the sea. It also may alter israel thinking about how best to defend the nature of the jewish state.

In the past, it doesn't seem to have had that effect on the Arabs. Only a catastrophic loss has that effect.

The Israeli debates go on apace, loudly. One of the many huge self-imposed handicaps on Palestinian society is that they cannot have this kind of debate, nor speak unorthodox thoughts outside of their own kitchens.

As for Friedman, he may be a hopeless optimist, but I still think he owes us all and big mea culpa for telling us what a swell idea Oslo was for all those years.
