Speaking of retirement, I'm not sure what to make of this:

(REUTERS) Chretien says Bush reassures him on Iraq contracts
OTTAWA, Dec 11 (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, on his last day in the job, said on Thursday that U.S. President George W. Bush had told him not to worry that Canadian firms would lose out on contracts to rebuild Iraq.
Chretien told a news briefing that Bush had called him to offer his best wishes for his retirement.
"He thanked us for what we are doing in Afghanistan and the offer of money for reconstruction in Iraq," Chretien said. "And he told me that the mention of Canada -- that we were to be excluded from activities in Iraq -- were not appropriate. But he said not to worry."
Chretien's comments appeared to be at odds with a statement from Bush that contracts for Iraqi reconstruction would only be given to companies from countries that risked lives in the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq.
Chretien, who leaves office on Friday, refused to send troops to join the war in Iraq because the fighting was not approved by the United Nations.
But Canadian forces have been playing a peacekeeping role in Afghanistan, and Canada has promised cash to help fund Iraqi reconstruction.
