LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Boden responds
Editor -- I write to respond to the quote and comments attributed to the Coalition on Homelessness in Sunday's article, "Feds say S.F. just needs to decide." The pull quote claiming we regularly oppose efforts to track homeless people as an invasion of privacy would have been accurate had it read, "the coalition opposes means of 'tracking' homeless people that invade their right to privacy.''

The city is spending more than $800,000 this year on a computer system to fingerprint and photograph every homeless person trying to access emergency shelter and denying beds to anyone not screened through this system.

In the past, not only has the coalition worked on systems of accountability and tracking, but I have helped write that portion of our federal grants.

The National Coalition for the Homeless spent several years working with communities on a national plan to end homelessness. It can be found at www.bringingamericahome.org.
