Gore realized that Dean would be the candidate. The candidate for President will select the chairman of the national committee. Gore's power within the party will increase. That simple.

I think it's fairly simple. Gore realized that Dean had grassroots support, but that he lacked the "insider" party support, setting up what was looking like a nasty nomination fight among three or four candidates. He realized by committing to Dean, he could stanch a lot of the blood needed to repel the $200 million buck Repugnican assualt by short circuiting the nomination fight.
