Are we saying that INAP holds the patent to a necessary technology component of voip?

No! only intelligent routing which in and of itself is more than voip but ultimately based on assumption of multiple carrier access (telco/cable/dsl) each of which have inherent strengths and weaknesses of technology as well as abilities to handle traffic and are essentially vpn's with no control outside their own pipes. inap is both more than yet dependent upon these multiple carriers, and the only questions are: Are the multiple carriers such as quest and at&t etc going to merge into a monolith before some animal like inap takes all their business. unlikely. then again, they could collectively shut inap out of business by cutting off their pipes to inap's pnap centers, a potential but legally risky business. or one carrier could buyout inap, but what of monopoly and anti-trust suits from competitors. better for all to contract with and support inap to be their mutual fail-safe routing optimizer thus equalizing the playing field where each major carrier gains revenue via performance routing through inap. latter is my scenario of political and legal/technological probability. g
