Canadian Indians have an alternative justice system called sentencing circles that are tied to the Queen's Bench Court of Canada. The Elders of the tribe with the help of a federal or provincial judge jointly determine punishment. I think the process has evolved and may be fully in tribal control. Usually the punishment is dropping someone off on an island for a few weeks to eat berries.

Thanks for your cool links, here is one to the People's Republic of Saskatchewan on Sentencing Circles.

That's interesting. I found this at the Toronto Star: "Muslims who choose to use the tribunals can ask the arbitrator, who could be a local imam, scholar or lawyer, to use either sharia or Canadian law to settle their differences." It suggests that you'd have to be Muslim to use it, which wouldn't be right, IMO.
