Frankly, I resent the tenor of that article, and the illogical conclusion that we are all being set up for confiscation. I will grant you that it "might be (done)different" this time, due to technological advances in metal detecting, etc., but...

I just called one of my area's 3 banks...the biggest one, one who claims to be the 5th largest bank in the USA...they just stated categorically, THEY are not sending out, have not sent out, nor are being asked as of this late date in Dec 03 any such notice as this hysterical knee-jerk article purports.

This is either an urban myth, a local preference thing, or just plain non-factual reporting. I dont' care...doesn't change what I'm about to say below.<g>

A little historical review is in order, 72 year old Chispas. I point out your age as you claim it proudly and without disrespect.

First of all, it was the gold IN THE BANKS that was the first level of confiscation back in '31.

Secondly, private owners were requested to turn in their gold in order to help restore depleted reserves at the NY Fed Reserve, thanks to an unrelenting raid by the French Govt. The French govt had already broken the link between a "pound" of sterling and the British Pound currency as the result of their shennigans.

So, taking the stuff "home" won't prevent confiscation orders and execution.

This nation returned TONS of gold VOLUTARILY to the NY Fed Reserve when the plea when out after the French were sent home empty handed in this authorized by war reparations action of WWI when the German's defaulted on their obligations. The first guarantor was Great Britain. The second was the USA.

I am young in WWI terms, and yes, younger than you, Chispas, but I have not forgotten the gold the French have stashed inspite of the EURO regs, and ditto the Germans. Researching this confiscation story has been an adult passion of mine, and I can back up every assertion made above with citation.

THIRD AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
The author is dead wrong...and you can check with Bob Johnson on this if you don't believe me:

US GOLD EAGLE SERIES is NOT coin of the realm. While it is made supposedly from US gold and coined by US mint, have you ever tried spending the one ounce piece for $50? Can't be done. Bartered, yes, used as coinage. NOPE!!!! Not even close.

A final piece of hysterical hyperbole designed to frighten and intimidate is this:
FLUSHING OUT GOLD and then following to a new hiding place is about the oldest trick in the book if one is seriously tracking whose got it and where is it kept. That's left over from the wild and wooly days of the goldrush.

Lastly, and worth considerable forethought and planning:
I would submit for your and others' contemplation:
Gold has MANY forms. That is a hint.
