Silver State mines California for unhappy business owners

Bruce Cowan, chief executive officer of Acclaim Electronics, believes he is part of a trend. The University of California, Los Angeles graduate and California native has abandoned the state and moved his corporate headquarters to Las Vegas.

He likes Nevada's relatively low real estate prices, the lack of taxes on business inventory, the lack of corporate and personal taxes, affordable workers' compensation insurance and a world-class airport. Cowan estimates that his operational costs run 20 percent to 25 percent lower than they did in Carlsbad, Calif.

"What's not to like? The air quality is better and the mayor is entertaining," Cowan said of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman. "He's the first Democrat I could say I've liked in a while."...

...For the sixth consecutive year, California continues to be the state's primary source of new businesses, she said. Of the 74 new businesses, 24 came from California.

"It's just been like shooting fish in a barrel over there," said Somer Hollingsworth, president of the Nevada Development Authority.

"It seems to be that everybody has gotten Vegas on their radar screen," he continued. "They really feel this is a pro business state, and they just absolutely love it.

"California has tended to be anti-business," he said.

During the last fiscal year ending June 30, the authority counted 19 new companies relocating to Southern Nevada from California out of a total 53. The 53 companies, which are part of the total for Nevada, brought 2,481 new jobs to the Silver State, the authority reported. The authority counted 10 expansions that added 792 jobs...

...Acclaim Electronics moved here about one month ago, having found California a hostile environment.

"It's like trying to run a marathon with two bowling balls chained to your legs," said Tony Fincham, operations director for Acclaim.

Cowan expects more tech companies to come to Las Vegas from California.

"Not only are they chasing jobs out of California, they are chasing jobs out of the country," Cowan said...
