I have been busy with what it seems a million things. I liked Bob Chapman article in many ways (some of which you pointed out) and that was why I posted it. The reason I used the preamble "If you can stomach the political take ..." comes from a very personal and family based reaction to any comparison to Nazism and Fascism. Wording such as "The Gestapo is at it again" evoke stories of heroism many of my family members told us (the children and grandchildren) around the dinner table, specially on Sundays and during family reunions. You see, I came from a family that fearlessly and with deeply rooted convictions engaged themselves in the ant-fascism resistance movement either as “partigiani” in the Apennines between my region (Emilia) and Tuscany, or in my city, organizing and executing the logistical support for those on the mountains. My father was picked up by the Gestapo and the “Camice Nere” (the fascist militia) several times and tortured because suspected of having stolen 3 trucks of pasta and other supplies from the German army depot in my city-which he did. Two of my uncles died as partisans, my mom was one of the “ragazze in bicicletta”: young women who every night biked food all the way to the partisan camps, covering 5 kilometres each in full curfew and under the “Pippo” raids (Pippo was the name given to small airplanes patrolling from the sky the movement of people at night). I could go on and tell you and the thread many more of these stories, which are passed on from generation to generation with pride but without any sense of heroism: more like the only way to live during the twenty years or so of my family involvement in the resistance movement. We (the children), rightly or wrongly, feel stomach contortions in front of the casual use of comparisons between today politicians or administrations and the deadly actions of the Gestapo or the Camice Nere. I have been reading some of your posts, but Man, who can keep up with you!!! I think you are the most prolific poster on SI. <vbg>. I followed a bit the discussion on Nike and their abuses. Being the eternal optimist I am, I thought of Michael Moore movie “The Big One”, of his famous phrase “Corporate Welfare Bums” and of an interview with him about the results of his activism posted here: dogeatdogfilms.com Take care my friend Anna
