< I have different opinions on US politics, and politicians, but this is not the place to discuss it. Similarly, I woud hope it is not a place to link US Politicians with Indo-Pak politics.>>

All politics are related, the sum total of 'peace overtures' today in the world is the net result of initiatives that are carried out behind the scenes. Peace is not created in vacuum, if the major irritants between nations decline peace takes off, that is exactly happening in South Asia right now, 15 months back 1 million soldiers faced each other as a result of cross border infiltration, the reduction of infiltration and ban on ‘jihadi tanzeems’ made possible through extra vigilance of this administration has led to ‘closure of opportunity to kill’ for these jihadis in India, this closure of ‘window’ has built confidence and hence the trip to Islamabad was possible, if these linkages are ignored than we will be looking at half baked political analysis.

The Presidency of USA played a very active role to avoid the war at first place, the withdrawal of Indian troops from borders and than number of trips by Rooca and Armitage put the dialogue going, my context is that since 911 much as we may disagree with approach of how it was dealt the Islamic countries have started treating the cancer within more actively and war on terror has become the number one agenda of lot of these nations this was not so before 911; those who condemn Bush highlight his failings as a person who has isolated America from the world he has put America as a key builder of consensus to deal with terror amongst nations and that connection cannot be overlooked by any strategic thinker, on the other hand Sharon excesses have derailed quite a peace off the track in ME however Arafat intransigence and diverse objectives are to be equally blamed, the most contentious issues of the world are now being tackled.

...but they are linked.

The whole world is linked and when one policy changes, the world moves to adapt to it.

Clinton was a hands off president. He shied away from international conflict that could embroil him in controversy. He had enough domestic and personal controversy to deal with and was unwilling to make the hard choices in international policy. It was much easier to relegate this duty to the UN. So, he chose the UN to do his difficult work and they failed miserably resulting in our 9/11 murders of a little less than 3,000 civilian children, women, and men. Far beyond the scope of the Lusitania and even Pearl Harbor.

In Clinton's term and its associated shyness, he decided to back out of the Middle East (ME). This left the states in the ME in a vacuum. So they banded together in their own alliance which would offer protection from Saddam Hussein.

...and well, ...you know the rest of this evolution.

I realize India was an up and coming regional power which was enhanced when the US began to pull out of the region but the UN failed us both (not to say India has stopped building their military, they haven't).

Think about this a moment. If the UN was capable of taking on terrorism and taking out Saddam Hussein, we wouldn't be where we are now. India would have more power in the region and investment in India would multiply exponentially in accordance with that new found influence.

It is a shame we have our civilians dead, India's aspirations squelched, and most certainly of all because of an impotent UN.
