French, never were straightforward in their opposition to war say like Germans were. Their primary objective was to put every single spanner they could find in US attempts of war against Iraq. They were not constructive in their opposition. They were more interested in projecting themselves as leaders of Anti US coalition. Right or wrong, they were on the opposing side of US effort. It was not a genuine anti war stance. Remember their dastardly attempt to scuttle NATO's attempt to support a fellow NATO member Turkey in case they requested for help? There are many that escape my mind right now, but I will post the laundry list later, gotta go...
