The question of Taiwan is an interesting one indeed. The breakaway province, did not separate from China. They were recognized by the US as China. It was the mainland that was considered the breakaway nation.

Taiwan was the official nation of China, until Nixon visited China. At that time we changed and then recognized mainland China as the real China, but defended the right of Taiwan to be independent.

Now with China becoming a more and more important trading partner, and with the problems of North Korea and the war on terror, Bush has found a new ally in China. It appears that he is willing to give in on the question of Taiwan, if he can improve Chinese relations.
