I have a Dell notebook, and you will find the battery bay on the underside. Depending on model the battery will slide out of the battery bay from the side of the computer. Slide and hold the battery latch and simply slide the battery out. Laptop batteries can be expensive, but should last several years if you have reasonable power management sets.

If the power light is on or blinking you have power. If it is blinking or flashing orange you need to recharge the battery from an electrical outlet. Laptops not used for extensive periods will discharge completely. You could possibly search for your model number on the Dell web site to obtain additional specs on your model.
