Hi, Solon. It's been a while, yet plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose ici, n'est-ce pas? It's kind of wonderful, in a peculiar way. So it is certainly true that one MAY rely on superstitious imagination to create "moral" codes and standards. But it is not recommended. Here's the easiest way, imo, of resolving the pesky question of whether ethics can exist sans religion. (The obverse question, whether religion can exist sans ethics? --we could ask some religious adulterers I've heard of what they think about that, but then they're adulterers, plus they've been stoned to death by co-religionists.) But here's how to see to it that the issue is a simple one: just define all ethical considerations, acts, values, as 'religious' ones. Life can be so simple, if one wants enough for it to be.

Maybe some of your atheist buds should try a moral form of government in which religion would not be allowed to mess things up ... Oh wait that has been tried ... For starters ... 60 million killed by Stalin, Lennin, and Trotsky. Mao only got to kill 35 million. Then there was the lesser Pol Pot who only killed 2 million Cambodians after closing all the normal institutions of a modern country, including banks, hospitals, schools, and stores and of course any exercise of religion was banned so's he could better indoctrinate the folk.
