It's quite simple Jack. In order to sway the vote of the legions of Americans who are not politically intuned, the Democratic candidate for President would be best served if these legions were subjected to daily bombardments from the press re: how poorly thing are going for W and our troops. Then the legions would be more inclined to vote "against" W, as opposed to for Dean et. al.
