No, that's not a fact; it's your interpretation.

My interpretation is that he was addressing his point to the cynics in the audience to show them another alternative. When you're trying to introduce people to different ideas, you don't tell them straight out that they're wrong, you let them figure it out for themselves, or simply reinvent themselves, otherwise they won't be receptive. I imagine that Friedman either expects a certain sophistication from the non-targeted readers or perhaps is simply indifferent to how hardliners interpret him.

My interpretation is only useful information to those who can tell an interpretation from a fact.
